I shall find a strategy that helps me achieve my overall goal (downsizing, freeing myself from stuff, jazzing up my life) and then figure out a way to measure it. One person I know has taken this strategy to heart: He's resolving to "sit less" this year, so he's tracking the percentage of computer time/TV time he spends sitting versus using his laptop while standing or watching TV while on the treadmill.
Research has shown that "self-monitoring" (a clinical term for charting or recording your progress) increases the probability of you keeping your resolution. This is due to the Hawthorne effect, which causes us to try harder when we think someone is keeping an eye on us.
I am selling my books like wildfire. If I were doing it for the money, it would be quite disappointing. You don't get back the money you spent. Still, my goal is to clear out things I don't use. I don't necessarily want to give all the stuff away but I don't mind setting the prices low enough so that customers want to buy.
Then THEY can worry about clutter, not me!!
